Tip # 7 – Pick Your Own Dew Worms The Night Before
Dew worms, nothing says I’m going fishing more than a big old coffee can full of moist leaves, dirt and of course night crawlers. Most tackle shops sell them, and all bait shops sell them, but you don’t need to shell out a bunch of money for something that is readily available to all of us, and possibly right in front or out back of our own houses!
When I was a kid, one of the first jobs I had was picking dew worms in my yard and selling them off of my porch in a cooler. Yes, I was a youthful entrepreneur, and that taught me quite a bit about business…..but thats another story. I used to go out at about 10 o’clock at night, flash light in hand and a big old coffee can under my arm. I’d sneak around the yard with my light watching for the fat night crawlers that were my quarry. Every time it rained, it seemed the yard came to life with these small serpent like creatures. I’d pick as many as I could before my mom would start calling me in to go to sleep. I probably averaged a couple hundred of them every time I went out “worm picking”.
I must admit, I did get a little obsessive about the whole thing, and I even wound up building myself a breeding container to start making the worm picking business a little easier. I took an old dresser, and drilled a bunch of 2 inch holes in the bottom of every drawer. Then I lined the inside of each drawer with window screening, filled each with dirt and started putting my surplus worms in to live. Needless to say, it wasn’t long before I had more worms on my hands than I could handle!
PS……I learned how to pick worms with my father, and its a great activity you can do with your kids the night before the big trip!
