Tip # 32 – Avoid Spawning Redds, Protect the Future Fishery

Many of us who fish tributaries for migratory species are very familiar with the term spawning redds.  Spawning redds are beds dug into the river or stream bed in order for fish to mate and lay eggs in.  The most common times that you will see fresh spawning redds in rivers and streams is fall and spring.  Salmon will migrate upstream from oceans or lakes in order to spawn in the very tributaries from which they were born.

Tim Smyth of Bingo Bango Fly Fishing talks to us in this video about how to identify and avoid stepping on spawning redds in order to protect the future of our fishery.
