Tip # 24 – Late Summer Lake Trout Fishing Techniques

Being a fish that prefers very cold waters, lake trout typically head very deep late in the summer.  Spring time is the season that these fish are usually targeted, just after ice out when they are cruising the shorelines of lakes in water that is only ten to twenty feet deep.  As the water warms, these fish head for the deep, cool waters, usually at depths of sixty feet or more.

Once they are down this deep, most anglers switch their focus to warm water species such as bass, pike and pickerel.  What that means is that lake trout recieve little to no pressure on many of the northern lakes they inhabit.  It can be tough to get your lure down deep enough to present your offering to these fish.  Have a look at this video for a great tip on getting your lure down deep where summer time lake trout can be found!
