Tip # 18 – Hire A Fishing Guide On New Water

Exploring new fishing locations is always pretty fun.  Whether you are primarily a stream fisherman, or you prefer fishing from your boat in a lake, the excitement of a brand new fishing spot is always plentiful!  Sometimes though, things don’t go quite as planned, and a great day can turn ugly pretty quickly.  Weather conditions, water temperatures, season, many factors come into play.  Areas you frequently fish become easier and easier to understand the more times you fish them.  This is what fishing guides do.

The better guides that I know have been fishing the waterbodies they guide on for a decade or more.  They know inside and out what to expect based on the weather, season, time of day etc.  It makes sense then that if you are making a vacation out of a fishing trip to a new area you should definitely consider hiring a guide for at least a small portion at the start of your trip.  A guides advice is golden when you are in an area that you are not familiar with at all.  Time won’t be wasted staring at a map as you try to make out land formations while you are out on the lake trying to find the deeper holes or weed beds as they are marked on the map.  When fishing on a river, you will spend far less time fishing unproductive water if you get yourself out with a weathered river guide beforehand.
